The BTWI Story

tower-1

2009

Bits of Technology Wireless Internet LLC (BTWI) was born out of necessity when founder Nathan Leerhoff moved to a rural area with limited access to reliable, high-speed internet. Frustrated with the available options, Nathan took action in 2009 by constructing a 110’ tower to connect his home to his computer store in Perry, Iowa. Even before the tower was completed, neighbors began showing interest in the service. What started as a personal solution quickly grew, leading Nathan to expand by adding additional towers.

2012

In 2012, Nathan and his father Jeff decided to leave their comfortable full-time jobs and give all they had to BTWI. Their dedication paid off. BTWI has grown significantly over the years. Currently, they have establishing nearly 80 tower locations to serve large portions of Dallas, Madison, Guthrie, Boone, Greene, Butler, Grundy, and Warren counties. They also now employ several people, providing jobs for the local area.

By 2016 BTWI was becoming a household name in areas of Boone, Dallas, and Madison counties. The company had grown by almost 50% due to the high speeds provided, dependability, and top-tier customer service. In 2016, BTWI also started providing internet to trade show events.

2021

In late 2021 Jeff unexpectedly passed away, leaving a large void in the BTWI team. While the company will never be the same, the rest of the amazing, dedicated team has done well to adapt and continue to carry BTWI's vision forward. Our dedication to providing reliable internet to under-served communities remains the foundation of everything we do. We remain focused on delivering the high level of service that our customers have come to expect. Jeff's influence continues to inspire us as we innovate, expand, and improve our services, always with the goal of bridging the digital divide for rural residents.

2023

As part of our commitment to bringing cutting-edge internet service to rural communities, BTWI began testing next generation fixed wireless equipment in 2023. This new technology enables us to deliver speeds up to 10x faster than our previous offerings, even to locations without a direct line of sight. In 2024, we began deploying this next-generation equipment in Perry, introducing our BTWI Platinum Plans, which offer speeds of up to 500Mbps to the entire community. We are actively working to extend these Platinum offerings to the other communities we serve, further enhancing the connectivity options for our customers. At BTWI, we’re dedicated to continuously expanding our network and improving the internet experience for rural areas, ensuring that our customers always have access to fast, reliable service.

2025

The company has now relocated to Minburn, IA after an unfortunate fire, which had left the team looking for a new home. BTWI was founded by innovation and resiliency, so this challenge wasn't going to be any different. Regardless of what comes our way, we believe in providing great customer experience, excellent customer service, and doing things the right way. Not because it sounds good, but because that is who we are. This is why we've invested in the equipment to bring you Platinum internet and experience faster speeds at the same low price.
